Class Schedule & Descriptions

Registration for dance classes at Alexander Academy of Performing Arts is open year-round; classes are organized by Fall/Spring session and Summer session. Read the class descriptions below to see what would be a good fit for you, and then click the 'Register for Classes' button to get signed up!

If you are not sure what dance class would be the best match for you, read the Placement Guidelines to get to know the ages, ability levels, and time commitments for each class type.

Beautiful Beginnings
Classes for Keiki

 

Kindermusik 

Learn a variety of styles of music while singing, moving, playing instruments, and hearing stories in this nurturing environment and well developed curriculum.

Pre-ballet- Elementary 1

Class focuses on basic ballet vocabulary and positions, song and dance, basic tumbling, musicality, creative movement, dance games, developmental gross motor skills within a nurturing, fun environment.

Tap/Ballet Combo

Class splits work on both beginner tap and ballet styles/skills. 

Elementary 2

Ballet technique is introduced with a fun creative curriculum. This is for the experienced young dancer, or the new keiki. 

Character Dance

This class focuses on musicality, rhythm, and posture to bring different characters to life from traditional ballets. 

Ballet 1A 

Geared for the experienced young dancer.​  Dancers need to take placement class to be eligible for this class

Acrobatics

These classes teach beginner-level tumbling, which develops flexibility and acrobatic skills. 

 

Jazz 

Focuses on classical jazz technique, using dynamic pop music and also incorporates hip hop, contemporary or classical jazz styles.

Tap/Jazz Combo

Class splits work on both beginner tap and jazz styles/skills.

 

Hip Hop

Class uses appropriate hip hop music and hip hop dance styles.

Contemporary

This class used modern, improvisation, and lyrical techniques. The students will be encouraged to push new boundaries, discover versatility, and minimize tension in the search for clarity and fluidity. This class has a ballet requirement.

 

Graceful Attitudes
Classes for Ages 10-adult

Jazz 

Focuses on classical jazz technique, using dynamic pop music and also incorporates hip hop, contemporary or classical jazz styles.

Beginning Tap

Incorporates basic tap steps and traditional style techniques.

Hip Hop

Class uses appropriate hip hop music and hip hop dance styles.

Break Dance

Uses urban dance styles to appropriate music choices.

Lyrical

For the level 3 and up dancer who has dance experience.  Class uses jazz and contemporary styles to lyrical pop music. 

Contemporary

This class used modern, improv, and lyrical techniques. The students will be encouraged to push new boundaries, discover versatility, and minimize tension in the search for clarity and fluidity. This class has a ballet requirement.

Ballet level 1-5

Beginner-advanced level or for students working their alignment, strength, and flexibility. Please see class requirements for each level.

 

Pointe/Variations

Beginner & Intermediate: by teacher placement only. Learn classical variations​

Body Conditioning

This class is designed specifically for dancers and dancers rehabilitating from injuries to strengthen and prepare their bodies for the rigours of dance. With a strong focus on core strength, students will be taught a series of exercises to be done mostly on a mat.
